Amplification of 16S rRNA gene sequences to differentiate two highly related bradyrhizobia species PAB
Giongo,Adriana; Ambrosini,Adriana; Freire,João Ruy Jardim; Zanettini,Maria Helena Bodanese; Passaglia,Luciane Maria Pereira.
A 16S rRNA gene PCR-based assay was developed aiming at a fast molecular diagnostic method to differentiate the two phylogenetically closely related species Bradyrhizobium japonicum and B. elkanii, isolated from soybean nodules, in order to identify those more competitive and comprising greater nitrogen fixation ability for use in the formulation of commercial inoculants. The assay used was able to discriminate ten reference strains belonging to these two Bradyrhizobium species, as well as to efficiently identify 37 strains isolated from fields cultivated with soybean.

Characterization of variants of Bradyrhizobium elkanii and B. japonicum and symbiotic behaviour in soybeans Ciência Rural
Kober,Marcia de Vargas; Sá,Enilson Luiz Saccol de; Freire,João Ruy Jardim; Giongo,Adriana.
Variation in rhizobia strains isn’t a desirable fact based mainly on the possibility of unexpected results on legume inoculation. In this work, we studied the variability on phenotypic characteristics and genetic stability of rhizobia strains recommended for soybean inoculation. Variants with stable colony morphology were obtained from Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain SEMIA 5080 and from B. elkanii SEMIA 5019. Variants from SEMIA 587 obtained by another author were also used. The variants differed on colony characteristics, nodulation capacity, nitrogen fixation efficiency and competitive ability for nodule formation in two soybean varieties (Jacui 7 and IAS 5). Symbiotic behavior varied according to plant variety. Only the variants 5019 G and 5019 P...

University education and training of microbiologists in Brazil: 1990-2000 BJM
Freire,João Ruy Jardim; Sá,Enilson Luiz Saccol de.
This paper aims to contribute to the discussion and concern on the future of microbiology in Brazil. This work presents a survey carried out in 2001 that shows a picture of Microbiology status in Brazil. Most of the conclusions are based on the data collected from the university courses and from the data supplied by the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) and the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Level Personnel (CAPES). However, some of the affirmatives are more based on the experiences with postgraduate teaching in microbiology than on the data provided by official institutions. Such affirmatives were made in order to improve the development of the microbiology in Brazil. Also, a plan that proposes higher number of scholarships awarded to...
